May 5, 2025 – Centreville, Va. — The Specialized Carriers & Rigging Foundation (SC&RF), in partnership with the Human Resources Research Organization (HumRRO), has launched an in-depth workforce research survey aimed at tackling the skilled labor shortage that continues to challenge the crane, rigging, and specialized transportation industries.
For more than a decade, this sector has faced persistent workforce gaps, with projections indicating that 41% of the current skilled workforce will reach retirement age by 2031. In response, the SC&RF survey is designed to gather actionable insights directly from those working in the field—information that will be critical in shaping recruitment, retention, and workforce development strategies.
“Our industry relies on highly skilled professionals, and we must understand their experiences, needs, and challenges if we are to build a strong pipeline for the future,” said Jackie Roskos, Director at SC&RF. “This research will help illuminate how workers enter the field, what keeps them there, and how we can better support SC&RA members in building pipelines into the industry.”
The survey includes questions on career pathways, training and education, demographic background, job satisfaction, work-life balance, mental health, and workplace culture. It also explores how technology, stress, and travel impact those in the profession. Respondents can provide open-ended feedback to share their unique experiences and perspectives.
Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and respondents will have the opportunity to enter a drawing to win one of five $100 Amazon gift cards.
“We are committed to fostering a sustainable workforce,” Roskos added. “The insights gained will directly inform SC&RF initiatives and support SC&RA members as they prepare for the future of the industry.”
The SC&RF invites and encourages all individuals working in crane operations, rigging, heavy hauling, and related roles to participate in the 10-minute survey. Their voices and this data are vital to shaping a stronger, more inclusive future for crane, rigging and specialized transport industry.
