2023 State of the Workforce in the Crane, Rigging and Specialized Transport Industry
The Specialized Carries & Rigging Foundation (SC&RF) is conducting its 2nd annual Industry Workforce Survey to Determine the State of Industry. The 2023 Report established a workforce development benchmark unlike any other data collection industry-wide.

The survey asked questions about occupations within each sector and the
characteristics of the staff in those positions, including:
- Occupations: Drivers, Operators, Maintenance Staff, Dispatch, Sales, Back Office (Accounting, Human Resources, Safety), Operations Management, and Executives.
- Characteristics: The survey included occupation-specific questions about the number of people in each occupation, the average length of employment, average wage, average level of education, recruitment methods, average turnover, the top reason for turnover, and workforce issues.
This data is collected anonymously and is published to benefit industry advocacy efforts, member recruiting programs and to enhance and grow the SC&RF’s ongoing workforce development initiatives.
2023 DATA COLLECTION
The 2024 State of the Workforce Study depends on your response to the survey and data collection in September 2023. Be on the look out for newsletter requests and emails regarding this survey.
WHY IS THIS INFORMATION IMPORTANT?
This demographic information will assist us in providing industry-wide data on the state of the industry. Everyone “knows” there is a labor shortage but many regions do not know how to plan for and anticipate upcoming retirements over the next decade, the average age employees entering the industry and why they are losing their workforce to competitors.
Armed with this information, SC&RF and SC&RA can help members with building retention programs, recruiting, industry awareness, curriculum development for high schools and other workforce programs.
HOW LONG WILL THE SURVEY TAKE TO COMPLETE?
The survey will only take 9-11 minutes.
ARE YOU THE RIGHT PERSON TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY?
There is a possibility that you and/or an HR representative may prefer to complete the survey together. The data you will need to complete the survey includes:
- Average employee tenure
- Reasons for turnover/Estimated turnover by percentage
- Recruiting methods
- Employee’s Education level
- Greatest challenge areas
WHY DO WE ASK FOR YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION IF IT’S ANONYMOUS?
The form asks for a contact for two reasons.
1) So we can send you a Thank you gift. Your time is valuable and we appreciate the time you will spend to collect the information and complete the survey.
