General Donation – Area of Greatest Need
Donating to the SC&RF (Specialized Carriers & Rigging Foundation) General/Area of Greatest Need is a great way to make a lasting difference in the efforts to bridge the skilled labor gap through scholarships, industry awareness programs and education. Your gift will be used to fund the program most in need of support for that given year. Each year, allocations are established to fund programs in:
- Educational Assistance (Scholarships and Company Grants)
Research - Workforce Development (Industry Awareness and Lift & Move Events)
- Support the industry today by making a donation.
Endowment Fund
A Structured Giving campaign to support the SC&RF’s programs.
A substantial endowment will help the SC&RF ensure that funds will be available in perpetuity to assist individuals in receiving training to advance their career in the industry; that necessary, industry-specific research is funded to provide a foundation for advocacy efforts; and workforce development initiatives are developed to provide effective awareness and recruiting for the industry.
As with most funds, a portion of the gain and earnings derived from the invested funds that comprise the SC&RF endowment are used each year in accordance with the endowment spending policy established by our Board of Directors.

Fund Categories
General Endowment
This fund is used to meet a variety of organizational purposes that include helping to meet annual operating expenses, supplement targeted programs and services that do not have full endowment funding, and make possible activities that enhance the overall quality of programs.
Educational Assistance Endowment
The funds provide academic support and tuition assistance (scholarships) for individuals who demonstrate a need or aptitude to excel in the crane, rigging and specialized transport industry.
Research Endowment
This fund supports research and related activities to benefit the crane, rigging and specialized transportation industry.
Workforce Endowment
Funds support workforce development activities, events, education and programs to raise industry awareness, promote career opportunities and member company partnerships with their schools and communities. This fund is restricted/earmarked.
Legacy Endowment Fund
Our personal legacies are often difficult to fathom and even harder to measure. If we pause to consider our life’s work and impact on the industry, employees and even friends or family – it’s hard to know how far our influence will reach.
Some among us are more intentional about building a lasting legacy. These thoughtful and passionate donors invest in that which is important to them and give of their time, their wisdom, and their resources. For those investors who believe strongly in the mission of the SC&RF, a donation to the Legacy Endowment Fund is particularly rewarding. A gift of endowment is a gift that lasts. It is, by design, a gift that creates a permanent source of support for the mission that will be there long after the giver is gone.
The SC&RF Legacy Endowment Fund was created in 2023 allowing families the opportunity to create a lasting memorial to their loved one while giving to the area of greatest need or passion.
Giving to a Legacy Endowment may be a popular option for companies and individuals in the industry looking to ensure that programs they have helped to shape and grow continue to receive an appropriate level of funding now and in the future. Some of our donors may choose to build endowment funds by contributing gifts during their lifetime – as a single gift, multiple gifts over a period of years, or a combination of outright and estate gifts.

What types of vehicles do you accept?
We accept most cars, trucks, trailers, boats, RVs, motorcycles, off-road vehicles, heavy equipment and other motorized vehicles.
Is my donation tax deductible?
The SC&RF is classified with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Donations to the SC&RF are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Because individual tax situations vary, please check with a tax professional to determine what, if any, tax benefit you may receive from your donation.
Must my car work to donate it?
We can take your vehicle running or not. However, it must be in one piece, have an engine and be towable. Contact a ______ to find out if your vehicle qualifies for pickup.
How quickly will my vehicle be picked up?
You will be contacted within 24 hours to start the donation process. Once the donation record has been created and completed, we will reach out to you within two to three business days to schedule your pickup. If you need your vehicle picked up sooner, please call us _______ as we may be able to make those arrangements.
Do I need the title to donate my vehicle?
Yes, you will need the title to the vehicle. If you do not have it, it is possible that other arrangements can be made. You can call us at ______ seven days a week for more information.

Corporate Named Scholarships
The Named Scholarship program allows companies or individuals who donate to earmark their funds for scholarships.
Each year these special awards are assigned to a recipient and the companies are recognized through press releases, articles and during the Annual Conference Closing Night Dinner.

Memorial or Tribute Scholarships
A Memorial or Tribute Scholarship is a meaningful and lasting way to honor a loved one and be part of the movement to support industry workforce development and research.
Complete the form below to make a donation in memory of an individual. Once donations reach a minimum of $3,000 a scholarship may be formed and awarded in memory of this individual.
George Bragg Memorial
George M. Bragg, long-time President of Bragg Crane Service, Long Beach, Calif., was the posthumous recipient of the Golden Achievement Award during the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) Annual Conference, April 21-25, at La Quinta Resort, La Quinta, Calif. He passed away on March 28, 2009.
“George Bragg has made countless industry contributions throughout the country and abroad. His contributions to SC&RA are extensive,” said Randy Goddard, SC&RA Chairman. “The winner has been known as a tough negotiator, a stickler to details, and a very successful individual in his business and, more importantly, with his family, friends and colleagues…No matter what he did or where he went in business or life, he earned and commanded respect and treated all those who know him with the same degree of courtesy and respect.”
George Bragg was active in the crane & rigging and specialized transportation industry for over 40 years. He rose through the ranks at the Association from Chair of the Crane & Rigging Group to become SC&RA Chairman for 1990-91. In recent years, he had been active on the Association’s Board of Directors, the Insurance Committee and the EN13000 Task Force. Mr. Bragg was also a very active leader with the Southern California Crane Owner’s Association and a very active contributor to his home community in Santa Ana.
Austin Essary Memorial
In 2017 the Austin Essary Foundation began a memorial in memory of son and brother Austin. Austin Essary took his own life less than one week prior to his 17th birthday. He struggled in school and felt his future was bleak even though he excelled at mechanics and welding. Had Austin had the opportunity to attend a Lift & Move event (liftandmoveusa.scr-foundation.org) or even talk to anyone in the heavy haul or crane & rigging industry, he might still be here today.
Mr. and Mrs. Essary formed a Foundation in his memory with the purpose of giving hope to other students who need encouragement and opportunity in non-traditional career paths. The Essary Memorial Grant will be awarded to an individual who has attended a Lift & Move event. For more information on the events click here.
Jay Shiffler Memorial
Peacefully and surrounded by his loving family, Jay Kendall Shiffler passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2019. He was 67.
Jay was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 19, 1952, to John Kendall Shiffler and Marjorie May King, the second of three fun-loving children, Cathy, Jay and Connie. After the passing of their mother, John married Carolyn Shiffler, and the family expanded to include two more wonderful sisters, Kathryn and Tricia.
Jay graduated from Columbus High School, honorably served his country in the U.S. Army and earned a business degree from the University of Cincinnati. Upon graduation he started a long and storied career in the construction equipment business.
Shortly after being transferred to Dallas, TX, he met the love of his life, D.Ann Slayton. Married February 19, 1983, they lived what many would call a fairy tale life. The two shared a love that was an inspiration to everyone. From scuba diving in the British Virgin Islands as newlyweds to carting their daughters to Europe, Mexico and across the country, there was no adventure too big or too daunting if they were together. He wanted all three of his girls to see the world; he embraced trips and vacations that involved seeing new places, learning interesting things, eating different foods and above all making memories.
Jay and D.Ann’s biggest adventure was raising their two daughters, Kendall and Bailey, who Jay loved with his whole heart. Being a father was Jay’s proudest accomplishment. He told stories of his wife and daughters to his colleagues, his friends and to strangers on airplanes. Nothing gave him greater joy than being under one roof with his daughters and later their husbands. Of his sons-in-law Brett Larson and Andrew Guinn, he was often heard saying, “We won the son-in-law lottery.”
While Jay worked to live, his career was a passion. He believed in the people he worked with and the products he sold. Jay was the consummate networker, and it was never just professional – it was always personal. Jay truly loved the construction equipment and crane industry and the many relationships he forged along the way. Jay had a cadre of best friends in the industry and he was a mentor to many.
The Foundation joins SC&RA and the industry at large in mourning the loss of Jay Shiffler who passed Thursday, December 26, 2019. Friends and colleagues have made donations to support the memorial award.

George Young Memorial
George was the Senior Advisor at George Young Mammoet located in Swedesboro, NJ. George and his company had been a member of SC&RA since 1964. His experience with the association was extensive – serving on the Crane & Rigging Group and the Allied Industries Group, the Crane & Rigging Tower Crane Committee, Editorial Advisory Committee, and Magazine Task Force.
He had also served on numerous SC&R Foundation Committees and was elected to both the SC&RA and SC&R Foundation Board of Directors where he served as Treasurer.
George also was elected to the SC&RA executive committee where he reached the highest volunteer position at SC&RA, serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2004-2005. By way of this honor, George had served on the Association’s nominating committee and strategic planning committee. George was currently serving on the Board of Directors as a past Chair, on the Past Chairman’s Council, and was the current Chair of the Association’s Insurance and Risk Management Committee.

Doug Ball Memorial
Douglas Allen Ball, 77 of St. James, NC passed away unexpectedly on March 16th, 2021 from a catastrophic stroke.
He and his wife enjoyed 55 years of a beautiful, loving marriage. Doug and Janet were natives of Montana and left Montana when Doug joined the U.S. Army after graduating with ROTC from the University of Montana. After serving in Vietnam where he served as a company commander, he joined the FBI as a special agent and retired as the Director of the National Drug Intelligence Center. He retired in 1995 and went on to a second career as the Vice President of the Specialized Carrier and Rigging Association before retiring in 2015. Doug and Janet retired and settled in St. James, where Doug loved to spend his days golfing and reading his favorite western novels. Four days prior to his passing, Doug shot a 77, his exact age much to the delight of his golfing buddies.
He is survived by his wife Janet and their two daughters, Tasha Virostek of Canal Fulton, Ohio, Allison Ball of Raleigh, North Carolina, and their four grandchildren: Angela Dugan, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Meghan Virostek a nurse at Vidant Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina, Luke Virostek 15, and Michelle Virostek, 13; a brother, William Ball of Billings, MT; and a sister, Sherry Kost of Missoula, MT. He is predeceased by his grandson, Jeffrey Virostek, aged 4.

Use of Funds
We respect the right of our donors to know how their money is being spent to further the SC&RF (Specialized Carriers & Rigging Foundation) mission. We are proud to report that the SC&RF undergoes an annual audit and is overseen by Board of Directors comprised of industry professionals and their spouses. Board & Committee meetings are open to all SC&RA members.
Allocation of Expenses
The SC&RF allocates expenses to two primary program areas – workforce development and industry research which directly support and uphold our mission. Workforce comprises nearly 70% of program expenses and is divided into three areas (scholarships, Lift& Move support, and education or curriculum development) and allocations vary per year based on growth expectations for area. Research studies and project expense comprise the remaining 30% and are often produced as the result of a specific need from the SC&RA governing committees and members. This percentage and allocation may vary slightly from year to year based on objectives and growth opportunity.
How We Fund our Mission
Funding for scholarships, education and research comes from individual donors and from companies believe and support our mission. As a 501c3 organization these contributions are tax deductible. Your gift helps us to accelerate our mission and grow needed programs to bridge the skills gap, provide education and necessary industry research.
