5/13/14 Foundation Awards $26,000 for Seven Scholarships and Three Grants

May 13, 2014 – The SC&R Foundation recently awarded $21,000 in scholarships for 2014-2015 to seven students preparing for careers related to crane, rigging and specialized transportation industry. Additionally, the Foundation awarded grants totaling $5,000 to three to employees at SC&RA member companies wishing to further their careers through continuing education courses or a vocational/technical college program. Later this year, the Foundation plans to award an additional $25,000 in Grants to recipients who are seeking additional skills to further their career or looking to enter the industry.

The scholarships and grants were announced during the Closing Night Awards & Recognition Dinner at the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) Annual Conference, April 22-26, at the Boca Raton Resort, Boca Raton, Fla. Since 1986, the SC&R Foundation has awarded over $380,000 in scholarships and grants.

In alphabetical order, this year’s $3,000 scholarship recipients are Caleb Brack, Jonathan Caldwell, Sara Crowley, Steven McLean, Samson Clay Meyer, Lacey Rucker and Jamal Shaheen.

Caleb Brack, a repeat SC&R Foundation Scholarship recipient, is a Civil Engineering major at The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., who plans to graduate in May 2016. His father, Luther Brack, Jr., is Manager of Heavy Iron Cranes, Lexington, S.C. Additionally, Caleb was employed during the summer of 2013 by an SC&RA member, J.E. Oswalt & Sons, Batesburg, S.C., where he worked on a crew and in the shop and drove a truck. He is the recipient of the Southern Industrial/Southern Crane Continuing Education Scholarship.

Jonathan Caldwell plans to earn a Master of Engineering degree, majoring in Construction Engineering Management, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in May 2016. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Central Florida, Orlando, Fla., in August 2010. Jonathan is a Draftsman/Engineer in Training at the AmQuip Crane Rental, LLC offices in Birmingham, Ala. AmQuip has announced it will match the Foundation’s scholarship, providing an additional $3,000 for the furtherance of Jonathan’s education. He is the recipient of the Terex Continuing Education Scholarship.

Sara Crowley is a Junior at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she plans to earn a Bachelor degree in Accounting by 2019. She received her Associate degree in Accounting from Northeast Texas Community College in Mt. Pleasant in 1999. While attending classes part-time, she works full-time as Driver Manager at Lone Star Transportation, Fort Worth, Texas, where she has been employed since 2007. She is the recipient of the Mammoet Continuing Education Scholarship.

Steven McLean is a Sophomore at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, Fla., where he plans to earn a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering in May 2016. He interned last summer at Beyel Brothers, Inc., Cocoa, Fla., where his father, Steve McLean, is Accounts Receivable Manager. Steven is the recipient of the George Bragg Memorial Scholarship.

Samson Clay Meyer, a three-time SC&R Foundation Scholarship recipient, is a Sophomore who plans to earn a Bachelor degree in Business Administration major at the University of Arizona, Tucson, in May 2016. His father, Samson Adolph Meyer, is Vice President of Marco Crane and Rigging. Co., Lakeside, Calif., where the scholarship recipient has interned as a part-time Administrative Assistant. Samson is the recipient of the NBIS Continuing Education Scholarship.

           Lacey Rucker,a high-school Senior at Tina-Avalon R-II School in Tina, Mo., plans to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing Management from the University of Missouri, Columbia. Her father, James Rucker, is Maintenance Supervisor at WireCo World Group, Kansas City, Mo. She is the recipient of the Christopher Lorenz Memorial Scholarship.

            Jamal Shaheen is a Junior who plan to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Calif., in June 2015. He earned an Associate degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences with an emphasis in Science and Math from Santa Barbara (Calif.) City College in May 2013. He currently interns at Specialty Crane & Rigging, Goleta, Calif., where his duties include Yard Supervisor, IT Support, and Accounts Payable and Receivable. He is the recipient of the Bennett International Group Continuing Education Scholarship.

Additionally, the Foundation awarded $5,000 in grants to David Dague, Ericka Davis and Donald Hinds, Jr.

David Dague, a Mechanic at Keen Transport, New Kingston, Pa., since March 2013, plans to use his $1,100 grant at the Franklin County Career and Technology Center, Chambersburg, Pa., for a course in Welding Orientation and Safe Practices.

Ericka Davis, Receptionist and Billing Clerk at McTyre Trucking Company, Inc., Orlando, Fla., since 2009, plans to use her grant to complete courses required for the Accounting Technology Certificate Program at Valencia Community College, Orlando, Fla. She also was awarded a grant last year. McTyre Trucking has graciously agreed to match the Foundation’s $2,100 grant. Ericka is the recipient of the TNT Crane & Rigging Continuing Education Grant.

Donald Hinds, Jr., has been a Driver at Keen Transport, working out of Winston-Salem, N.C., since May 2013. He plans to use his $1,800 grant in pursuit of an Associate degree in Applied Science for Business Administration at Forsyth Technical Community College, Winston-Salem, N.C. He has enrolled in this program part-time since the fall of 2012 and plans to graduate in the spring of 2015.

The Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association (SC&RA) is an international trade association of more than 1,300 members from 43 nations. Members are involved in specialized transportation, machinery moving and erecting, industrial maintenance, millwrighting and crane and rigging operations.
